Krisna Saravanamuttu is a Specialized Honors Criminology student at York University, where he also represents all 52,000 undergraduate students as an elected representative on the York Federation of Students (YFS). Krisna served one term as the as the YFS Vice-President Equity from 2007-2008 and two terms as the President from 2008-present. Krisna has been elected for two consecutive terms from 2008-present to the National Executive of the Canadian Federation of Students–the national and provincial students union representing over 600,000 students across the country. In addition, Krisna is currently serving his fourth consecutive term as a Senator on the York University Senate, the institution’s highest governing academic body. He strongly believes in building community and has had numerous executive positions with the York University Student Centre Corporation from 2008-present.
Being active in the Canadian anti-war and peace movement, he was elected in 2008 to the steering committee of the Canadian Peace Alliance. In 2010 Krisna was appointed as a panelist on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Customer Service Advisory Panel where he helped to develop and produce a report that will guide institutional changes in one of North America’s largest public transit companies. In the Tamil community Krisna is the Youth Representative and English Spokesperson for the National Council of Canadian Tamils. During the summer of 2010 he played a major leadership role as the Chair of the Tamil Refugee Coordinating Committee (TRCC). He aspires to work in the field of international human rights law.
